TEA JOURNEY [14] | Is Green Tea a Diet Food?

Jun 19, 2023

Green tea is known as one of the most effective natural beverages for weight loss.
But is this true? Or is it just a marketing scheme?

Let's examine through some existing articles to see why there are these health claims!

Green Tea Stimulates Metabolism:

Green tea contains a compound called catechins, with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) being the most abundant in green tea. It helps to stimulate metabolism. When metabolism is increased, the body can burn calories more efficiently.

Through multiple books and articles our team have read, we didn't actually see a lot of claims from China, Taiwan, and Korea that green tea is for weight loss. However, with the advancement of molecular biology, there's been extensive studies of green tea's health benefits. Catechin, or green tea's unique soluble Tannin polyphenol, has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Increased Fat Oxidation:

The catechins in green tea are known to increase fat oxidation, aiding the body in using fat as an energy source. This, combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, can contribute to weight loss.

Appetite Suppression:

Studies have also shown that consuming green tea can reduce appetite in healthy levels. However, the catechin (caffeine) levels in green tea are not so high that it disrupts sleep.

Enhancement of Exercise Performance:

The caffeine improves mood and boost energy levels, enhancing exercise performance. This can be beneficial for those incorporating exercise into their weight loss plans.

In fact, there are cases shared through overseas blogs where individuals have successfully lost weight by drinking green tea. One notable example is Samantha Reese, who reportedly lost 100 pounds (approximately 45 kg) while consuming green tea.

Samantha Reese started drinking green tea after hearing about its superfood reputation. Although she initially didn't enjoy the bitter taste, she forced herself to drink it. Eventually, it became a habit, and she made it a part of her daily routine, drinking about 9 cups a day along with lemon in the morning. Subsequently, she lost approximately 7 kg in just one month.

Of course, relying solely on green tea for significant weight loss is difficult. It would be more helpful to replace sugary carbonated drinks with green tea while maintaining a balanced diet.

Nevertheless, green tea is said to provide some assistance. We'll share with you some beneficial green tea recipes in hopes to have you enjoy a healthy summer!
